Madhyamaheshwar is the Panch Kedar shrine associated with the navel (nabhi) of Shiva in the distributed bull-form legend of Garhwal. After the Pandavas sought Shiva’s forgiveness, local mahatmya holds that the mid-body of the submerged bull remained in this Mandakini valley — ‘Madhya’ Maheshwar, the lord at the centre.

Together with Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar, it completes a five-fold Shaiva body of the Himalaya.
