Pongal (Thai Pongal) is Tamil Nadu’s multi-day harvest festival. Fresh rice boiled with milk and jaggery is allowed to overflow — ‘Pongalo Pongal’ — a wish that prosperity may brim over. Surya, cattle, and the earth are thanked in sequence across the days.

The overflowing pot is the festival’s central image: abundance that cannot be contained. Families draw kolam at the door, offer the first Pongal to the sun, and on Mattu Pongal honour cattle who labour in the fields — a lived ecology of devotion.
