Significance in mythology

Somnath is traditionally listed as the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas. Puranic narrative (especially Chandra–Soma traditions in the Shiva Purana cycle) tells that the Moon god, cursed and fading, performed penance here; Shiva restored him, and the place became Somnath — ‘Lord of the Moon’. The Prabhas Khanda traditions of the Skanda Purana further sanctify the Prabhas coast as a major tirtha.
