शिव की महा रात्रि — व्रत, जागरण, और लिंगाभिषेक।
Maha Shivaratri is the most sacred night dedicated to Shiva. Devotees fast, keep vigil (jagran), chant, and offer bilva leaves and water or milk to the Shiva linga. It is both austere and intimate — a night to sit with stillness, courage, and the destroyer of ego.
महाशिवरात्रि शिव को समर्पित सबसे पावन रात्रि है। भक्त व्रत रखते हैं, जागरण करते हैं, बिल्वपत्र और जल/दूध से अभिषेक करते हैं — अहंकार के नाश और शांत साहस की रात।
One beloved telling says the gods and demons churned the ocean for amrita; a deadly poison (halahal) arose first. Shiva held it in his throat, turning blue as Neelkanth, saving the worlds. Shivaratri remembers that fierce compassion. Another stream of devotion celebrates the marriage of Shiva and Parvati — the night when cosmic stillness and Shakti unite.
एक प्रिय कथा: देव–दानव समुद्र मंथन में पहले हलाहल उठा। शिव ने उसे कंठ में धारण कर नीलकंठ कहलाए — लोक रक्षा की करुणा। दूसरी धारा शिव–पार्वती विवाह की है — शांति और शक्ति का संयोग।
Shiva is worshipped as Mahadeva — ascetic yogi, householder with Parvati, and Nataraja whose dance ends one cycle so another may begin. The linga is not an idol of form alone but a sign of formless presence. Offering bilva, datura, and water is an old grammar of love toward that presence.
शिव महादेव हैं — योगी, पार्वती के संग गृहस्थ, और नटराज जिनका नृत्य एक चक्र समाप्त कर नया आरंभ करता है। लिंग निराकार सत्ता का चिह्न भी है। बिल्व और जल उसी प्रेम की प्राचीन भाषा हैं।
The Neelkanth story teaches that true strength absorbs poison so others may live — a moral many households retell to children on Shivaratri night.
नीलकंठ कथा सिखाती है — सच्चा बल विष स्वयं धारण कर लोक बचाता है। शिवरात्रि की रात बच्चे यही सुनते हैं।
