महाशिवरात्रि व्रत कथा — तिर्थयात्रा मौलिक पुनर्प्रस्तुति।
महाशिवरात्रि शिव जी की रात्रि है — जागरण, अभिषेक, बिल्वपत्र और मन को जगाए रखना।
एक कथा नीलकंठ की: क्षीरसागर मंथन से हलाहल उठा। शिव जी ने विष कंठ में धर लोक बचाए। जागरण उसी करुणा का स्मरण है — नींद का त्याग दूसरों की रक्षा हेतु।
दूसरी कथा लिंगोद्भव की: ब्रह्मा–विष्णु ने स्तंभ के आदि–अंत खोजे; अहंकार हारा, शिव अनंत ज्योति रहें। शिवरात्रि अहं की सीमा सिखाती है।
लोक कथा में बहेलिया/शिकारी बिल्व और जल की बूँदें अनजाने अर्पित कर पुण्य पाता है — भाव जाने बिना भी शिव कृपा देखते हैं; जानकर तो और अधिक।
