Gudi Padwa (also Ugadi in parts of the Deccan/South under related new-year customs) marks Chaitra Shukla Pratipada — the traditional new year for many Maharashtrian and Konkani households. A gudi (bright cloth, garland, and inverted pot on a pole) is raised as a sign of victory and invitation to prosperity.
