Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth (or public manifestation) of Ganesha, remover of obstacles and lord of beginnings. Homes and mandals install clay murti, offer modak, sing aarti for one and a half to ten days, then immerse the murti (visarjan) with the cry ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’.

One widely told story: Parvati fashioned a guardian from turmeric paste or bath unguents and set him at her door. Shiva, denied entry, struck the child’s head in battle — then restored him with an elephant’s head and declared him foremost among the ganas. The festival holds both tenderness and awe: the beloved child of the Goddess who became leader of divine hosts.
