Kanaka Durga on Indrakeeladri overlooks the Krishna. Shakta tradition links the hill with Durga’s victory over mahishasura-class forces in the Devi Mahatmya cycle and with regional Andhra mahatmya that place the goddess as guardian of the river crossing.

Vijayawada (‘city of victory’) is popularly read through this theology: the golden (kanaka) mother on the hill confers victory, protection, and prosperity to the Krishna basin.
