Temple Glimpse
Mythology & Significance
जय काली माँ
Victory to Mother Kali
Bengal’s living call at Kalighat
Significance in mythology
Kalighat in Kolkata is counted among the great Shakti Peethas. In the Puranic Sati–Daksha cycle — preserved in Devi and Kalika Purana traditions — Vishnu’s chakra portions Sati’s body as Shiva carries it in grief; where each part falls, a peetha arises. Popular 51-peetha lists associate Kalighat with the toes of Sati’s right foot.
Kali here is the fierce-compassionate mother of Bengal’s Shakta imagination: time, death, and protection gathered in one urban tirtha that later gave the city its colonial-era name, Calcutta / Kolkata.
Local stories & beliefs
Animal sacrifice traditions (where practised under temple rules), red hibiscus, and the lane-life around the shrine shape Kalighat’s intense urban sacredness.
Bengali households treat Kalighat Kali as a city mother — approachable yet awe-inspiring. Kali Puja night and ordinary Tuesdays/Saturdays both draw vow-keepers who believe the Mother of Kalighat answers quickly in distress.
