नवरात्रि व्रत कथा — देवी दुर्गा की महिमा।
देवी भागवत और दुर्गा सप्तशती के अनुसार, जब महिषासुर ने त्रैलोक्य पर अधिकार कर लिया, तब देवताओं की तेज-राशि से भगवती दुर्गा प्रकट हुईं।
अष्टभुजा/दशभुजा रूप में अम्बिका ने सिंह पर सवार होकर असुर-सेना का संहार किया। नव दिन तक घोर युद्ध के बाद महिषासुर का वध हुआ।
यही स्मृति शरद और वसंत नवरात्रि में मनाई जाती है। नौ दिन देवी के नौ रूपों — शैलपुत्री से सिद्धिदात्री तक — की आराधना होती है।
कथा में कहा गया है कि जो श्रद्धा से देवी का जाप और कथा सुनते हैं, उनकी सभी विपत्तियाँ दूर होती हैं और शक्ति का संचार होता है।
व्रत विधि: नवरात्रि संकल्प, घर/मंदिर में कलश-स्थापन, प्रतिदिन देवी पूजा, दुर्गा सप्तशती या देवी स्तोत्र पाठ।
यथाशक्ति उपवास या एक बार सात्त्विक भोजन। कन्या पूजन, रात्रि जागरण और आरती। अष्टमी-नवमी विशेष फलदायी मानी जाती हैं।
दशमी को विजयोत्सव — बुराई पर अच्छाई की विजय का स्मरण। उत्तर भारत में रामलीला और दक्षिण में देवी उत्सव simultaneous भक्ति-धाराएँ हैं।
फलश्रुति: नवरात्रि व्रत से भय-नाश, विद्या-बुद्धि, सौभाग्य और शत्रु-विजय की कामना पूर्ण होती है। माँ भक्तों को अभय देती हैं।
