श्रावण शुक्ल पंचमी को अनेक प्रदेश नाग पंचमी मानते हैं। नाग देवताओं को दूध, पुष्प और चित्र द्वारा सम्मान दिया जाता है।
शिव जी नागभूषण हैं — कण्ठ पर नाग उनकी उग्रता पर विजय और भय के साक्षी हैं। इस दिन शैव भक्त शिव अभिषेक भी करते हैं, विशेष जब तिथि सावन सोमवार से मिले।
लोककथाएँ बताती हैं कि जब मनुष्य अहंकार से पृथ्वी के रक्षकों को भूलता है, संकट आता है; जब श्रद्धा और अहिंसा लौटती है, कल्याण होता है। सर्प को क्रूरता से मारना इस दिन वर्जित माना जाता है।
