जन्माष्टमी व्रत कथा — भगवान श्रीकृष्ण का प्राकट्य।
द्वापर युग में मथुरा में कंस का अत्याचार बढ़ गया था। देवताओं की प्रार्थना पर भगवान विष्णु ने देवकी-वसुदेव के पुत्र रूप में अवतार लिया।
आषाढ़/श्रावण कृष्ण अष्टमी की मध्यरात्रि को श्रीकृष्ण का जन्म हुआ। कारागार के द्वार स्वयं खुल गए, यमुना ने मार्ग दिया, और वसुदेव जी बालक को गोकुल ले गए।
नंद-यशोदा के घर बाल गोपाल पले। उन्होंने पूतना, तृणावर्त आदि असुरों का नाश किया, और कालान्तर में कंस-वध कर धर्म की रक्षा की।
जन्माष्टमी व्रत उसी दिव्य जन्म की स्मृति है। भक्त दिन भर उपवास रखते हैं, मंदिर सजाते हैं, झूलन-झूला और मध्यरात्रि आरती करते हैं।
व्रत विधि: प्रातः स्नान-संकल्प। दिन भर कृष्ण-नाम जप, भागवत कथा और भजन। सात्त्विक भाव से बाल गोपाल की पूजा — मक्खन, मिष्ठान्न, तुलसी अर्पण।
संध्या से मध्यरात्रि तक कीर्तन और कथा। ठीक जन्माष्टमी काल में आरती, ‘जन्माष्टमी की जय’ और लोरी-भजन गाएँ।
व्रत के बाद प्रसाद वितरण करें। गौ-सेवा, बालकों को मिठाई और दीनों को दान विशेष पुण्य माना जाता है।
फलश्रुति: जन्माष्टमी व्रत से भक्ति बढ़ती है, घर में आनंद आता है, और कृष्ण-कृपा से जीवन के विघ्न दूर होते हैं।
जो नर-नारी प्रेम से जन्माष्टमी मनाते हैं, वे गोकुल-मथुरा की लीला को हृदय में बसा लेते हैं।
